The year of 2008 has been an year where remarkable military victories has been archived by the Sri Lankan Armed forces against the LTTE terrorists who has devastated this tiny island of Sri Lanka for more than two decades. It is quite remarkable that at the last day of this year, another LTTE held town has been liberated.

Hopefully , 2009 will be the year in which the LTTE terrorists are wiped out from our mother land and permanent peace is brought by enabling life without fear to all citizens of this country. All these victories would not have been possible without the sacrifices of many brave hearts who have sacrificed their lives for the protection of the country.

One of the remarkable features of chrome is, its speed and uncomplicated nature of functionality. As always from Google, Chrome is another great Google software product.

Terrorism and South Asia

South Asia has about 1/5 of world population with multi ethnic multi religious cultures. Being south Asian and Sri Lankan, we have experienced terrorism more then any other part of the world. Apart from Maldives, and Bhutan, All other countries in South Asia is confronted with major terrorism problems. Sri Lanka, has been suffering from terrorism for almost 3 decades now.

Why is it so difficult to eliminate this problem from south Asia. I see 3 major reasons for this.

1. Poverty

Most of the people in South Asia are poor people and the wealth distribution among the populations is extremely uneven. Due to this, many people could be easily converted to extremist movements. The sufferings of people emerge as a violent expression of terrorism.

2. Politicians

Secondly, most of the elite people who govern South Asian comes are very selfish natured and they tend to replies race, religion cast ect as a means of coming to power. Once in power, they do very little to the people but for themselves.

3. Other people's problem

Other reasons is that, most people in this part of the world is of the opinion that, so long as it does not happen to me or my country, it is not my problem. As a result, each countries terrorist comes from the neighbor countries. India's terrorist come from Pakistan, Sri Lanka's terrorists come from India and so on.

As long as these leaders does not come to release these three facts and find permanent solutions for these, there seems to be no end to this great menace that is plaguing south Asia.

Axis2 Going TLP

After about 4+ years from its inception, Axis2 project is set to become a top level project in apache software foundation. The great thing about this is that, Axis2/C is also going to become top level along with Axis2/Java. Alone with these two projects, the sub projects which add QOS functionality to Axis2 projects will also come under the wing of Axis2. These sub projects include Rampart, Savan, Sandesha, Kandula, Rahas in in both java and C versions.

So when you are looking for a Web Service engine in apache, you no longer need to go search under Web Services. Just come to axis2 :)

Google spread sheets in action

Today, I saw one fascinating action with Google spread sheets. Being a GSOC mentor, I saw the mail from Leslie on missing t-shirts , asking people who did not receive GSOC shirts to go and put an entry to google spread sheet. The fascinating thing is that, while I am logged in to it, i can see others editing the spread sheet. Number of people simultaneously editing the page. That is one great sight as to how all the complexity is managed at such real time.

How to use autoruns tool to remove viruses

If you are a windows user, your system must have been subjected to a virus attack at least once. I have faced virus problems number of times recently and what is amazing is the number of viruses that are not detected by the anti-virus software.

When your system is infected by a virus, you will notice some usual behaviors like slowing of the machine, disappearance of the show hidden folders option, etc.

From my experiences with viruses, the most useful tool for me to remove viruses has been the autoruns.exe tool from sysinternals.com. It is a very very easy to use tool. Here is how it works.

Quite often, when a virus or a malware attack on a machine , it will register itself as an autorun entry in the registery. There can be one or more such entries. An autorun entry is an entry which is executed when your system boots up. So when a virus has an autorun entry, every time you boot up yours system, the virus is also running.

What autoruns.exe tool does is, it shows you all autorun entries in the windows registry.

As you can see in the image, it has various options to view these entries. So how to you locate a virus among these large number of entries ?.

Well, after all its a very simple trick. If you look carefully, there is the name of the publisher for almost all good autorun entries like once from Microsoft , google etc.

So just go down looking for entries which do not have a publisher, and if you find one, just google for those. It is a lot faster way of locating these nasty viruses, than to post mails to a forum and waiting for replies.

Google Summer of Code Mentoring

I mentored a student in one of two GSOC projects of Axis2/C. It was quite a good experience for me since the student was in another country and and the communication had to go entirely through email. Even though I did mentor another project on the previous year, the student was from sri lanka and I could talk with him face to face and discuss the project issues with the student. So it was a completely new experience for me to mentor an student from another country via email.

The student turned out to be quite responsive and the project finished pretty well contributing some code to Axis2/repository as well.What I was really impressed with this student was the fact that he would respond pretty quickly to the emails I sent to him. Hopefully he would stick around with the project and contribute to the project.
